1986 CCL Games

DeSales (5-0, 0-0) vs. St. Charles
Date:  October 4, 1986
Location:  Brookhaven

Result:  DeSales 6, St. Charles 0
Chris Roy’s 6-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Jack Elgin in the 3rd quarter was the difference in the Stallions 20th straight victory.  With 48 seconds left in the game, St. Charles tackled DeSales' punter on 4th down at the 19-yard line, giving the Cardinals their deepest penetration into Stallion territory.  Two plays later, linebacker John Crabtree picked-off a pass to preserve the win for DeSales.  Dan O’Reilly led the game with 70 yards rushing and also registered 12 tackles on defense for the Stallions.

Result:  DeSales 31, Bishop Ready 6
DeSales used a balance attack - 139 yards rushing and 139 yards passing - to move to 7-0 overall, 2-0 in CCL play.  Jake Elgin threw for 3 touchdown passes to lead the Stallions.  Two of Elgin’s scoring tosses were to junior tight end Chris Roy (8, 33) and the other was to Chris Rogers for 21 yards.  Paul Haynes added a 6-yard touchdown run and Chris Cordi kicked an 18-yard field goal for the Stallions.  DeSales intercepted four Ready passes out of 20 attempts. 

DeSales (7-0, 2-0) vs. Bishop Wehrle

The Stallions won their 22nd straight game by posting their 7th shutout during their same stretch and improved to 8-0 overall, 3-0 in CCL play.

DeSales (8-0. 3-0) vs. Bishop Watterson
Date:  November 26, 1986
Location:  Northland

Result:  DeSales 10, Bishop Watterson 7
After faulty lighting forced the game to be played on a Sunday afternoon, sophomore place kicker Dan Sprout kicked a 20-yard field goal with 10 seconds left in regulation to give the Stallions their 23rd straight win, the longest winning streak in the state.  Scoreless at halftime, Watterson took a 7-0 lead on their first possession of the 2nd half.  It was the first time all season that the Stallions trailed in a game.  DeSales quarterback Jack Elgin led his team on a 6 play, 51 yard drive and scored on an 8 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7 after a Sprout extra point.  With 1:15 remaining in the game, the Stallions took over at their own 48.  Elgin connected with Mike Green for 19 yards that moved the ball down to Watterson’s 8 yard line, setting up Sprout’s game winner. 

DeSales (9-0, 2-0) vs. Bishop Hartley

Result:  DeSales 20, Bishop Hartley 14
DeSales captured their 2nd straight CCL title with their 20-14 win over Bishiop Hartley.  Jared Van Guilder ran for 133 yards on 19 carries and scored 2 touchdowns as the Stallions won their 24th game in a row.  Van Guilder’s first score capped-off a 16-play, 82-yard drive in the 2nd quarter and after a missed extra point it was 6-0 DeSales.  John Crabtree added a 1-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter, followed by the 2nd score by Van Guilder in the final period. 

1986 Quick Facts 

• The Stallions finished undefeated for the 4th time in school history

• DeSales won its 8th CCL Title

• DeSales moved up to Division-II after competing in Division-III in 1985

• The Stallions finished the season ranked 3rd in the state in final AP Class AA Poll, but only finished 5th in the computer polls.  In 1986, only the top four teams in each of the four regions qualified for the playoffs

• DeSales finished as the top ranked team in the Columbus Dispatch Poll in their division

• The Stallions were the defending State Champions and could not defend their title because they didn’t qualify for the playoffs. 

• Head Coach Phil Mauro was in his first season after taking over for Tony Pusateri

• The Stallion defense held opponents to 5.6 ppg

• Defensive End Dan O’Reilly, a 3-year starter, was named 1st-Team All-Ohio

• Junior Quarterback Jack Elgin finished the regular season 4th in the area with 1002 passing yards

• Elgin was 2nd in the area, at the end of the regular season with 80 completions

• Senior Chris Cordi was named 1st-Team All-Ohio

• Junior Chris Roy led the Stallions with 19 receptions for 313 yards

• Senior Brian Mannion was 2nd on the team with 18 receptions for 209 yards
