1990 OHSAA Playoff Games

Divsion-II, Region Semifinal
DeSales (8-2) vs. Athens (7-3)

Date:  November 2, 1990
Location:  Lancaster Fulton Field

Result:  DeSales 42, Athens 0
Stallion running backs Chad Young and Steve Smith combined for 327 yards rushing and five touchdowns as the Purple and White rolled over Athens.  Not only did Chad Young make his presence felt on the offensive side with 3 scores, but the two-way player broke the game open in the 2nd quarter.  With Athens driving, on 4th-and-2 on the Stallions’ 15 yard line, lining up as a defensive end, Young tackled Bob Bailey for a 1-yard loss with 1:59 remaining in the half.  On the next play, the Stallion senior fullback took it 84 yards for the touchdown to give DeSales a 22-0 lead at the half.  SFD pitched their 5th shutout of the year and held Athens quarterback Bubba Lichtenberg, who came in with nearly 1,300 yards passing, to just 67 yards on 3 completions.  Athens was previously averaging 30.2 points per game, but were shut down early thanks to four 1st quarter sacks by the Stallions.  Chalaco Clark led the way defensively for DeSales with 2 sacks and a fumble recovery.

Senior Running Back Chad Young (22)

Divsion-II, Region Final
DeSales (9-2) vs. Briggs (10-1)

Date:  November 9, 1990
Location:  Gahanna High School

Result:  DeSales 20, Briggs 7
Running back Chad Young scored twice for the Stallions and Mike Pharion returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown as DeSales advanced to the State Final Four.  Pharion recovered a Ty Howard fumble, which was forced by linebacker Chalaco Clark, just 61 seconds into the game to give the Stallions an early 6-0 lead.  However, with over 1,500 yards rushing, Howard proved to be a threat on the ground after a 55-yard run later, set-up his 5-yard score and the Bruins took the lead 7-6 with 6:14 remaining in the opening quarter.  Howard would again get Briggs on the move in the following frame, leading his team down to the DeSales 21 yard line.  The Stallion defense stiffened and forced a turnover on downs.  Later in the quarter, Chad Young crossed the goal line from one yard out on 4th-and-goal and DeSales took a 12-7 lead into halftime.  Howard had 98 yards on his first 10 carries, but would be held to 8 yards on his next 10 attempts before leaving with an injury late in the 2nd half.

Divsion-II, State Semifinal
DeSales (10-2) vs. Steubenville (11-1)

Date:   November 16, 1990
Location:  Sulsberger Stadium (Zanesville)

Result:  DeSales 13, Steubenville 0
DeSales quarterback Brian Emmerling threw two 2nd quarter touchdown passes to lead the Stallions over previously unbeaten Steubenville.   The sophomore signal caller completed 7 of 11 passes for 92 yards and found Luke Fickell and Mike Merrick for scores.  The Stallions intercepted two Big Red passes, including Chalaco Clark’s with 19 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter, which led to Merrick’s touchdown reception before the end of the half.  Steubenville came into the game averaging 28 points per game on offense and was set-up to score early in the first quarter after the Stallions fumbled on the game’s first play from scrimmage, but Eric Susi blocked a Mike Jones 29-yard field goal.  Billy Luksco added the other interception for the Stallions, who advanced to their 2nd state championship game in school history.

Divsion-III, State Final
DeSales (11-2) vs. St. Marys Memorial (13-0)

Date:  November 29, 1990
Location:  Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium

Result:  St. Marys Memorial 14, DeSales 3
Despite out-gaining St. Marys 218-131 in total yards and converting seven more first downs, the Stallions could not overcome five turnovers and finished as runner-up.  DeSales turned the ball over three times inside their opponent’s 40 yard line.  St. Marys gained a majority of their yards on their opening possession as the state’s top-ranked team scored to take an early 7-0 lead.  DeSales placekicker John Mahle would later put the Purple and White on the scoreboard with a 24-yard field goal with 2:21 remaining in the half.  The Stallion defense, which had not given up more than a touchdown in a game since late September, held St. Marys to just 27 yards of offense in the 2nd half.  The Roughriders put the game out of reach after Mike Elston intercepted a Brian Emmerling pass and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown late in the 3rd quarter.
