1994 CCL Games

DeSales (6-0, 0-0) vs. Bishop Watterson
Date:  October 15, 1994

Result:  DeSales 41, Bishop Watterson 6
DeSales remained perfect on the season, improving to 7-0, 1-0 in CCL play thanks to a stout defense that held Watterson to 87 total yards and forced 7 punts.  The Eagles came into the game outscoring opponents 239-19.  The Stallion offense ran for 341 yards and did not punt one time.  Quarterback Matt D’Orazio threw for 110 yards with 2 touchdowns and accounted for 115 yards on the ground with 2 touchdowns.  The Purple and White jumped on the Eagles in the 2nd quarter, scoring 21 points.  Brady Mangini rushed for 115 yards on 18 carries for the Stallions, who also received 58 yards rushing and a touchdown from Gary Berry.   Patrick Rond and Andy Habing added touchdown receptions for DeSales.  The teams had previously split the last 10 meetings, with both schools winning five each. 

DeSales (9-0, 1-0) vs. St. Charles

Result:  DeSales 62, St. Charles 14
For the first time since 1985, DeSales entered the postseason with an undefeated record after a 62-14 win over St. Charles.  The Stallions, 10-0, finished the regular season unbeaten for the 5th time in school history.  Brady Mangini led the Purple and White by scoring 3 times (30, 8, 18).  Matt Stewart only needed 3 carries to get his 128 yards, thanks to two touchdown runs from 50 yards or longer.  Marc Gentry came up big on special teams - returning a blocked punt and a kickoff for Stallion scores.  Gentry’s 65-yard kick return for a touchdown was part of 23 points scored by DeSales in the 2nd quarter.  With the win, the Stallions edged Steubenville for the top seed in Region 11.

1994 Quick Facts 

• DeSales returned 23 lettermen from the 1993 team which finished 6-4, with 3 of those losses by a combined 8 points

• The Stallions captured their 12th league title

• It was the school’s first undefeated regular season since 1986 and 5th overall

• The 1994 team set a school record for most points scored in the regular season (387)

• DeSales finished as the top seed in Region 11, Division-III

• The Stallions were ranked 4th in the final Division-III AP Poll

• Bob Jacoby was named Division-III Coach of The Year in Ohio

• Andy Habing (DL) was named Division-III 1st-Team All-Ohio; Matt D’Orazio (QB was 2nd-Team)

• The Stallion defense finished the season, allowing just 11.5 points per game

• Brady Mangini led the Stallions with 926 yards rushing and 17 TD

• Greg Roberto was the leading receiver for DeSales, hauling in 19 receptions for 359 yards and 3 TD

• The Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman Football teams at DeSales, all finished undefeated in the regular season in 1994

• DeSales needed an 11-play, 82-yard drive, capped-off by a 1-yard TD run by Gary Berry with 5:12 remaining, to defeat Zanesville on the road, 15-12, in their closest regular season game.

• In a Regional Semifinal, the Stallions blanked Ironton, who had lost in the state final in 1993 and 1992, 13-0. 

• The ’94 team featured a number of 3-year starters:  Brady Mangini (RB), Marcos Segovia (OL), Zach Werber (OL), John Roy (LB) and Marc Gentry (LB)

• As an upperclassmen, Brady Mangini ran for a combined 1988 yards

• The Stallions lost to Steubenville 35-31 in the Region 11 Final to finish 11-1
