1995 CCL Games

DeSales (6-0, 0-0) vs. Bishop Watterson (5-1, 0-0)
Date:  October 13, 1995

Result:  DeSales 14, Bishop Watterson 0
After a scoreless first half that featured two turnovers, the Stallions were led by Gary Berry and his 143 yards rushing.  In the 2nd half, on a 3rd and 10, Berry ran for 33 yards, which set up a 28-yard touchdown pass from Joe Magliocca to Nick Dembski.  Berry also added a 36-yard score for the 4th ranked Stallions.  Adam Rader and Mike Fickell recorded two sacks each for a Stallion defense that stopped three Watterson 4th down conversions in the 4th quarter.  The ’95 defense had only given up 19 points through 7 games and posted its 4th shutout of the season.

For the second straight season and the sixth time in school history, the Stallions finished the regular season undefeated.  DeSales’ defense dominated St. Charles, holding the Cardinals to 21 yards rushing and captured their 2nd straight CCL title. The Stallions, 10-0, were led by Gary Berry and Adam Rader, who each had two touchdowns.  Berry ran for 119 yards with a score and also had a 43-yard punt return for a touchdown.  The Stallions' lone score in the first 24 minutes, was a 1-yard score by Adam Rader.  In the 3rd quarter, DeSales scored 21 points, which began with a 7-play, 53 yard scoring drive to open the 2nd half.  The next two scores, were courtesy of Berry, who scored on a punt return, then on a 19-yard run, which was set up by a Mike Mayhew interception.

1995 Quick Facts 

  • The Stallions captured their 13th league title

  • It was the school’s first back-to-back undefeated regular seasons, since the 1985-1986 seasons

  • DeSales finished as the top seed in  Region 6, Division-II

  • The Stallions were ranked 2nd in the final Division-II AP Poll

  • The Stallions defense allowed just 33 points in the regular season, which set the record for fewest points allowed

  • Kurt Murphy (OL) and Adam Rader (LB) were named 1st-Team All-Ohio in Division-II

  • Linebacker Adam Rader was named the Division-II Central District Defensive Player of The Year

  • In addition to Rader, Kurt Murphy (OL), Mike Fickell (LB), Gary Berry (RB) and Jason Wiggins (LB) were all named 1st-Team All-Central District

  • In his first year as a starting quarterback, Joe Magliocca threw for 822 yards and rushed for 400 yards

  • The Stallions lost 17-3 in a Division-III Regional Semifinal against Bishop Watterson
