What is the fondest memory from your playing career at DeSales?
The rush running onto the field every Friday night. It was all the emotion from 4+ days of tough physical and mental preparation finally materialized.
What made playing for DeSales so special?
Playing with a lot of the same guys I grew up with since I was 10 or so. We all had one goal even from that age: to win a state championship at DeSales. Although we came up just short of that goal and picked up some great friends along the way, that bond from such a young age formed the greatest friendships I still have to this day.
What was it like playing for your coach?
No one would describe coach Bob Jacoby as soft or gentle; he always wanted more out of us. Not because we disappointed him, but because he knew we had it in us. I think looking back we would all agree that we are better men, leaders, fathers, husbands, etc. because we learned to push beyond our limits... and I, for one, am grateful for that. Best times in my life.
What was your best game?
I’d have to say Kentucky Highlands in 2005, but beating St Ignatius in 2003 was pretty special.
With DeSales playing Kettering Alter for the first time since 2005, what do you recall from that game your senior year?
I remember specific plays, like the big QB hit that caused a fumble, but I think the individual plays are lost in the gravity of that game as a whole.
Coming into that season, we were ranked #1 in the state and had all the expectations and hype that came with it, but we hadn’t lived up to them. If I recall correctly, we were were 1-2 and had just been blown out by St. Xavier at home. We still hadn’t won a game on the brand new field/stadium and our season was on the brink.
Then here comes a traditional powerhouse in Bishop Alter, who I believe was ranked #1 or #2 in the state at the time, so no rest for the weary. The thing I remember most about that game was that from about the 3rd or 4th play on, we knew we were going to win and, as a defense, we knew they were going to score on us. We ended up winning 17-0, and I think that game gave us our swagger back. We had lost to two great Division I schools (both of whom went on to the final 4 I believe), but now realized we could beat just about anyone else. We walked off the field that night with the first ever win in the stadium and a 2-2 record, but most importantly, with a renewed belief that we could win a championship that propelled us all the way to the title game.
Do you still follow DeSales, if yes, how closely?
I check in on the scores every week or two, but haven’t been to a game since my brothers played.
