HACKNEY

1979-1982

Where are living now?
Seattle, Washington

Did you play collegiately?
Cornell University in Ithaca, NY

What are you doing now?
I am an elected State Representative in Washington State

Married?  Children?
Not yet.

What is the fondest memory from your playing career at DeSales?
Making the varsity as a junior. I was not expected to dress and I lettered that year. One day the team had to run "punishment sprints" 10 extra 100 yard sprints. I won all 10 and Coach Pu gave me a varsity locker after that practice.

What made playing for DeSales so special?
I grew up idolizing high school football and I loved the winning tradition at DeSales and the support from our fans. Football players received a lot of attention. The entire school knew me and my big brother John "Big Hack" Hackney.

What was it like playing for Coach Pusateri?
Coach Pu loved football and his players. He taught us to respect the Purple- on and off the field. He taught me to never make excuses when I failed. I always own up and show I am determined to do better. I have never forgotten that lesson.

What was your best game?
Bishop Ready my senior year. I got hurt that game and missed the rest of the season, but I was eating up their offensive line and they could not stop me. In fact, one of their players intentionally hit me from behind (cheap shot) that tore my cartilage because they were so frustrated that I was stronger and faster than the Ready guys who tried to block me.

Do you still follow DeSales, if yes, how closely?
Mostly around State playoffs. I have friends from the class of 1983 that send me links to watch the games.
