Week 9
Steve
SMITH

1987-1990

Where are living now?
Marysville

Did you play collegiately?
No. I enlisted in the Army right after high school.

What are you doing now?
I’ve been a manager for Meijer for 20 years.

Married?  Children?
My daughter is 15 and attends Marysville high school. My girlfriend and her son also live with us.

What is the fondest memory from your playing career at DeSales?
Whipping Watterson 26-0 my senior year.

What made playing for DeSales so special?
Tradition. I went to St. Matthias right next door. I beat Jamey Cua’s single season rushing record against Steubenville. Think I had 1,428 yards by games end. Jamey was the first one to congratulate me after the game. Always thought that was special.

What was it like playing for your coach?
Coach Jacoby is an awesome person and coach in every way describable. He was intense and knew how to get everyone’s best out of them.

What was your best game?
Probably that Watterson game. Think I had 145 yards and 3 TD’s. I believe Billy Lukcso had 4 interceptions.

In honor of it being Steubenville week, what do you recall from the 1990 playoff game against the Big Red?
It was a hard fought game and we wanted it more. I remember we won 13-0. Our defense was awesome the whole game. Brian Emmerling and I fumbled an exchange on the first drive and lost possession on our end of the field. They drove to within the ten and the defense stopped them there. Steubenville tried a field goal and Eric Susi blocked it. I’m pretty sure it was after that exchange Emmerling hit Fickell for a TD. On their next drive Chalaco Clark intercepted and had a nice return. Then Emmerling hit Mike Merrick for a TD right before half. It was a sweet catch. They got the ball to start the second half and Billy Lukcso got an interception. Our next drive didn’t manage much. I think we missed a field goal. Steubenville drove down the field to a first and goal and our goal line D stuffed them right there. After that we brought John Callaghan in as a fullback and power ran the ball with Chad Young and myself to eat up the clock. That was it. We were off to the Division 2 State Championship. Unfortunately that game didn’t go as well.

Do you still follow DeSales, if yes, how closely?
Yes. I’ve been to many games through the years and enjoy following on pouring purple. GO STALLIONS!!!
